Parasite review – a gasp-inducing masterpiece

Parasite review – a gasp-inducing masterpiece

In Bong Joon-ho’s flawless tragicomedy, a poor yet united family bluff their way into the lives of a wealthy Seoul household

The ideal way to experience South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho’s awards-garlanded, international box-office smash is with as little prior knowledge as possible. So if you’re reading this before seeing the film, and you’ve managed to avoid the whirlwind of publicity it has attracted since winning the Palme d’Or last May, it may be simpler to just stop and head straight to the cinema. Because, at the risk of adding to the hype, Parasite really is the kind of remarkable experience that makes modern movie-going such a joy. I saw it for the fourth time last week and I’m now desperate to view the black-and-white version that Bong recently unveiled at the Rotterdam film festival.

Described by its creator as “a comedy without clowns, a tragedy without villains”, Parasite is more Shakespearean than Hitchockian – a tale of two families from opposite ends of the socioeconomic spectrum, told with the trademark genre-fluidity that has seen Bong’s back catalogue slip seamlessly from murder mystery, via monster movie, to dystopian future-fantasy and beyond. We first meet the Kim family, headed by father Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho) and mother Chung-sook (Chang Hyae-jin), in their lowly semi-basement home, hunting for stray wifi coverage and leaving their windows open to benefit from bug-killing street fumigation. They have nothing but one another and a shared sense of hard-scrabble entrepreneurism. So when son Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik) is faced with an unexpected opportunity to home-tutor a rich schoolgirl, he gets his gifted artist sister, Ki-jung (Park So-dam), to forge a college certificate, bluffing his way into the job and into the home of the Park family.
An architectural wonder perched high above the slums of Seoul, with views not of urinating drunks but of luxurious lawns and starlit skies, this wealthy house is everything the Kims’ pokey dwelling is not: elegant, angular and weirdly isolated. While aloof businessman Mr Park (Lee Sun-kyun) is at work, his anxious, uptight wife, Yeon-kyo (Cho Yeo-jeong), tends to their coquettish daughter and hyperactive young son. It’s a lifestyle that relies upon hired help: tutors, a chauffeur and, most importantly, a devoted housekeeper Moon-gwang (Lee Jung-eun), who stayed with the building after its original architect owner moved out. Spying an opening, Ki-woo (newly dubbed “Kevin”) realises that his own family could easily fill such roles, and hatches a plan that will inveigle the Kims into the privileged lives and home of the Parks.

Beyond the deliberate ambiguity of the title (which, like Jordan Peele’s oddly comparable Us, cuts both ways), Bong once again foregrounds a distrust of wealth and authority that has been a recurrent feature of his work since his 2003 breakout Memories of Murder, continuing through films as diverse as The HostMotherOkja and, of course, Snowpiercer, to which Parasite contains several knowing nods.
The Kim family may live in sewage-flooded squalor, but they are clearly every bit as smart as, and a lot more united than, the Parks, who turn their noses up at the smell of “people who ride the subway”. Similarly, while the smug Mr Park is habitually depicted ascending the stairs of his ultra-modern home, and the Kims are pictured scampering down city steps to their own underworld apartment, it’s clear who holds the dramatic high ground.

When it comes to deception, too, those on the upper rungs of the societal ladder are as practised as those upon whom they look down. In a world of vertical non-integration, Parasite finds gasp-inducing depths lurking beneath even the most apparently placid surfaces. Yet Bong is careful to keep his opposing forces keenly balanced, creating the cinematic equivalent of a Rorschach inkblot test in which the audience is invited to decide for themselves the precise meaning of these strangely symmetrical apparitions.
Perfectly accompanying the film’s tonal shifts is Jung Jae-il’s magnificently modulated music, which moves from the sombre piano patterns of the curtain-raiser, through the mini symphony of The Belt of Faith to the cracked craziness of cues in which choric vocals do battle with a musical saw. Just as the action can segue from slapstick to horror and back – sometimes within the space of a single scene – so Jung plays things straight even as madness beckons, ensuring that the underlying elements of pathos are amplified rather than undercut by pastiche.
For me, Parasite is best described as a melancholy ghost story, albeit one disguised beneath umpteen layers of superbly designed (and impeccably photographed) generic mutations. Thrillingly played by a flawless ensemble cast who hit every note and harmonic resonance of Bong and co-writer Han Jin-won’s multitonal script, it’s a tragicomic masterclass that will get under your skin and eat away at your cinematic soul.

In these frightening and uncertain times, the expertise, scientific knowledge and careful judgment in our reporting has never been so vital. No matter how unpredictable the future feels, we will remain with you, delivering high quality news so we can all make critical decisions about our lives, health and security. Together we can find a way through this.
We believe every one of us deserves equal access to accurate news and calm explanation. So, unlike many others, we made a different choice: to keep Guardian journalism open for all, regardless of where they live or what they can afford to pay. This would not be possible without the generosity of readers, who now support our work from 180 countries around the world.
We have upheld our editorial independence in the face of the disintegration of traditional media – with social platforms giving rise to misinformation, the seemingly unstoppable rise of big tech and independent voices being squashed by commercial ownership. The Guardian’s independence means we can set our own agenda and voice our own opinions. Our journalism is free from commercial and political bias – never influenced by billionaire owners or shareholders. This makes us different. It means we can challenge the powerful without fear and give a voice to those less heard.
Your financial support has meant we can keep investigating, disentangling and interrogating. It has protected our independence, which has never been so critical. We are so grateful.
We need your support so we can keep delivering quality journalism that’s open and independent. And that is here for the long term. Every reader contribution, however big or small, is so valuable.

SIMPLE YET PROFOUND.(అమెజాన్ ప్రైమ్లో అందుబాటులో ఉంది.)

'Mallesham' Brings the Untold Story of Lower-Caste Weavers to Light

Caste-based occupations subjugate those belonging to the lower castes in such a way that they find neither escape nor relief from poverty.

The Telugu film Mallesham, directed by Raj Rachakonda, is a milestone in the history of contemporary low-budget, off-beat cinema.

Among biopics, which tend to be about well-known names and figures, it is path-breaking in the sense that it depicts the life story of an ordinary man named Mallesham, and his hard work and talent which led him to become an artist among weavers.

While Indians are familiar with the handloom sarees of Pochampalli, known for their their intricate designs, Mallesam acquaints viewers with the lives of the men and women who make these. The sarees are popular among the urban upper-middle class, yet their makers struggle to make ends meet. The film acts as an invitation to its viewers to sample life on the other side.

Suicides of poverty-stricken weavers in Andhra Pradesh, who are burdened by large debts, forms the backdrop of both the film and Mallesham’s life story.

Ambition against all odds

Asu poyatam or the work of setting the pattern of the thread before the weaving even begins is a painstaking task, done mostly by women. Doing this results in a loss of bone density, which is something thousands of weaver women suffer from. Mallesham, since he was a child, thus becomes determined to fashion a device which could ease this task.

The film also notes how meagre the returns are in weaving, a caste-based profession in Telugu states, confined to the lower castes of Padamshalis, Shalis and Devangas. There is no assurance of minimum wage. Weavers are at the mercy of the market. The traditional set-up of any village, where upper castes monopolise the market and money lending businesses, also works to the disadvantage of the weavers.

Mallesham thus faces significant challenges like lack of resources, lack of education and lack of  access to the English language. He is a primary school dropout who only has the ability to use his innate engineering skills. It is his ambition, however, which fuels him to make the machine at a very low cost.

Role of women

Women’s issues have a significant role to play in the story. Mallesham, despite all his economic drawbacks, refuses to accept dowry to marry the woman whom he falls in love with, just as he refuses to bow before an upper-caste moneylender who was his classmate.

Mallesham’s wife Padma inspires him, helps him by taking up work as a tailor and migrates along with him to the city. She is his partner and not a woman character whose role is limited only to courtship and marriage. She is equally determined to make this dream come true for the benefit of the larger community.

Critique of merit

The film is critical of modern education and the concept of ‘merit’ that is not determined by skill and actual knowledge but by grades, marks and percentages. The semi-literate young Mallesham has the ability to use the concepts of engineering to solve the weavers’ problem.

However, he professes no knowledge of English or the scientific theory that is taught in technological institutions. The film is a fascinating critique of the gap between education and its relevance to immediate society.

The film also fleetingly touches upon the phenomenon of engineering students whose concerns are marks and degrees but who do not have skills to tide through in their profession.

A vast number of middle class youth in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana opt for technological education over the social sciences and humanities. Their numbers add to the unemployment rate in the country, thanks to factors like privatisation which no longer ensures quality in education, parental pressure to have every child get a BTech, and so on.

Kancha Ilaiah’s theories on ‘skill versus merit’ are depicted with rigour in the film. Men and women of the lower castes who possess the skills suffer the stigma of being unmeritorious while those of the upper castes boast of their irrelevant merit which can only be measured with grades and not with the benefit it can do to society.

Systematic subjugation of lower castes

The state wants to preserve the professions of the artisan classes in the name of protecting heritage, but it overlooks the suicides of weavers who find themselves in huge debts.

While Dalits suffer the stigma of being assigned humiliating professions like manual scavenging, the professions of the artisan castes are glorified as those which preserve culture and heritage. However, the truth is that caste-based occupations subjugate those belonging to the lower castes in such a way that they find neither an escape nor relief from poverty.

Mallesham could be seen as a political intervention of the lower castes whose members have come forward to tell a story that is unknown to mainstream Indian society.

Finally, the film works because of talented actors such as Priyadarshi who plays the lead role. He, along with actors Ananya, Jhansi, Chakrapani Ananda and Laxman Aelay, make the film the success that it is.

Shot Division In Film Making

Posted on the 20 November 2011 by Nandu1985 @vivek_arumanda

Hello friends, today i am going to tell u about shot division. I love this part in film making because shot division shows the caliber of a director how well he can shoot a scene. Hope u people are aware what is the meaning of shot division..Before that please don't get confused between a scene and a shot. Both of them are different. To tell u clearly..

Scene: A scene is nothing but change of location...or a combination of various shots with respect to same location i.e here no location change takes place. That is for example please have a  look at the image below. Below is the snap shot of a scene which is written by me long time back. Image depicts how a scene looks like.

Shot Division In Film Making

Shot: Whereas, a shot is nothing but the duration between the camera on and off ( i.e) for example just follow the above image...that very scene can be divided into many number of shots depending upon the visual power of an individual without disturbing the rhythm of the motion picture so that viewer doesn't get confused. This shot division differs from individual to other  because there is no rule for dividing a scene into many number of shots..Getting confused...? So, let me explain..

Please have a look at the above image..Let us assume the above scene as Scene No:1

In the above scene location is Abhiram's house:

So, first shot would be showing a house and this nothing but an establishing shot..Name is as 1A i.e nothing but A denotes first shot in scene one.

Showing this house can be done in many number of ways..

It can be a TILT SHOT or it can be a MEDIUM SHOT or it can be a WIDE SHOT..choosing a shot is directors choice and it can be different from one individual to another since ideas and creativity can't be same with everyone :)

After that this scene happens to taking place at Abhiram's bedroom..so now it can be a MEDIUM SHOT or a LONG SHOT  or a  PAN  from one part of the room.

Else, a closeup shot of a clock, etc., can be done to establish that Abhiram is lazy..THESE CAN BE NAMED AS SCENE NO:1B,1C SO ON DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF SHOTS U ARE GOING TO DIVDE A SCENE.

Like this, we will just divide each and every action written in the action  part of the script  into different shots.Shot division plays an important role in film making.

I have already told u that the method of dividing shots depends upon the particular individual like how he see's it in  his visualization. There are few ways and methods for dividing a shot. So the u will not get confused while dividing it. I will tell u those methods in my next post. Please comment if u have any doubt about this post.
